{"id":10463,"date":"2026-04-07T11:42:05","date_gmt":"2026-04-07T11:42:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/be\/10463\/"},"modified":"2026-04-07T11:42:05","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T11:42:05","slug":"belgium-strengthens-ties-with-finland-to-boost-aid-for-ukraine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/be\/10463\/","title":{"rendered":"Belgium strengthens ties with Finland to boost aid for Ukraine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>07 April 2026 15:19<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Pr\u00e9vot is in Finland to underline the need for continued European support for Ukraine, stressing that the conflict \u201cmust not be allowed to disappear from the European agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Pr\u00e9vot\u2019s visit highlights Belgium\u2019s collaboration with Finland through the Shelter Coalition for Ukraine, a Finnish initiative in which the Belgian development agency Enabel is responsible for constructing and renovating shelters for the Ukrainian population, Belga <a style=\"color: rgb(53, 152, 219);\" href=\"https:\/\/www.belganewsagency.eu\/foreign-minister-to-discuss-european-support-for-ukraine-during-finland-visit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Finland, with a population of 5.5 million, has more than 50,000 civil defence shelters. In peacetime, these facilities serve as sports halls, play areas, or underground car parks; in crises, they can be made operational within 72 hours. Pr\u00e9vot said Belgium can learn from Finland\u2019s model and will visit a shelter in Merihaka capable of accommodating 6,000 people.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">During his visit, Pr\u00e9vot, a member of Les Engag\u00e9s, will meet Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen in Helsinki. \u201cUkraine must not become a topic we grow tired of,\u201d he said. \u201cOur support must remain resolute, in terms of military resources, humanitarian aid and concrete projects for sustainable reconstruction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Pr\u00e9vot is also scheduled to visit Jordan and Lebanon later this week. Last week, Belgium was among 15 European countries to sign a statement calling for peace in Lebanon, urging Hezbollah to \u201ccease all hostile action\u201d and calling on Israel to \u201crespect the sovereignty\u201d of the country.
