The Antwerp Games were the sixth occurrence of the modern <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/sports\/Olympic-Games\" class=\"md-crosslink \" data-show-preview=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Olympic Games<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"topic-paragraph\">The 1920 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/sports\/Summer-Olympic-Games\" class=\"md-crosslink \" data-show-preview=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Olympics<\/a> were awarded to Antwerp in hopes of bringing a spirit of renewal to Belgium, which had been devastated during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/event\/World-War-I\" class=\"md-crosslink \" data-show-preview=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">World War I<\/a>. The defeated countries\u2014Germany, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Austria\" class=\"md-crosslink autoxref \" data-show-preview=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Austria<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Hungary\" class=\"md-crosslink autoxref \" data-show-preview=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hungary<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Bulgaria\" class=\"md-crosslink autoxref \" data-show-preview=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bulgaria<\/a>, and Turkey\u2014were not invited. The new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Soviet-Union\" class=\"md-crosslink autoxref \" data-show-preview=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Soviet Union<\/a> chose not to <a class=\"md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off eb\" data-term=\"attend\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/dictionary\/attend\" data-type=\"EB\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">attend<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>United States: 95<\/p>\n<p>Sweden: 64<\/p>\n<p>United Kingdom: 43<\/p>\n<p>Belgium: 42<\/p>\n<p>France: 42<\/p>\n<p class=\"topic-paragraph\">Note: Medal count per the <a class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/olympics.com\/en\/olympic-games\/antwerp-1920\/medals\" data-show-preview=\"true\">IOC website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"topic-paragraph\">The city, plagued by bad weather and economic woes, had a very short time to clean up the rubble left by the war and construct new facilities for the Games. The athletics stadium was unfinished when the Games began, and athletes were housed in crowded rooms furnished with folding cots. The events were lightly attended, as few could afford tickets. More than 2,600 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/sports\/list-of-Summer-Olympic-athletes\" class=\"md-crosslink \" data-show-preview=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">athletes<\/a> (including more than 60 women) participated in the Games, representing 29 countries. The highlight of the track-and-field competition was the running of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Paavo-Nurmi\" class=\"md-crosslink \" data-show-preview=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Paavo Nurmi<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Finland\" class=\"md-crosslink autoxref \" data-show-preview=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Finland<\/a>, who battled Joseph Guillemot of France and won three of his nine career gold medals\u2014in the 10,000-meter run, the 10,000-meter cross-country individual race, and the cross-country team race. In the 5,000-meter run he finished second to Guillemot (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Life-After-War-1367956\" class=\"md-crosslink \" data-show-preview=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sidebar: Joseph Guillemot: Life After War<\/a>).
