BRUSSELS, April 27 (Reuters) – The \u2060European Union on Monday extended its sanctions against \u2060Myanmar until at least May 2027, in an effort \u200cto maintain pressure on the country’s military rulers more than five years after their coup toppled an elected government.<\/p>\n
The measures include asset freezes, \u200btravel bans and an arms embargo for \u2060105 individuals and 22 \u2060entities. They were first imposed after the February 2021 military \u2060coup \u200cand the subsequent crackdown on dissent.<\/p>\n
“The EU reiterates its strongest condemnation of the actions taken by \u2060the Myanmar military since the 2021 coup,” the \u200bEU Council said, \u200cciting what it described as continuing grave human \u2060rights violations and \u200bwidespread restrictions on fundamental freedoms.<\/p>\n
It called for an end to all violence and the release of people who have been \u2060arbitrarily detained.<\/p>\n
Earlier this month, coup leader Min \u200bAung Hlaing was elected as president of Myanmar after an election denounced by Western governments as a sham to perpetuate \u2060military rule.<\/p>\n
The United Nations says at least 3.6 million people have been displaced since the coup, and the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners has verified nearly 8,000 killings and \u200bclose to 31,000 arrests, with more \u2060than 22,000 people remaining in detention.<\/p>\n
The EU said it continues to \u200bwithhold direct financial assistance to \u200cthe administration and to suspend any \u200baid that could be seen as legitimising the military leadership.<\/p>\n
