{"id":14395,"date":"2026-05-06T18:53:47","date_gmt":"2026-05-06T18:53:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/be\/14395\/"},"modified":"2026-05-06T18:53:47","modified_gmt":"2026-05-06T18:53:47","slug":"europes-laws-ill-equipped-to-deal-with-superhacking-ai-lawmakers-warn-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/be\/14395\/","title":{"rendered":"Europe\u2019s laws \u2018ill-equipped\u2019 to deal with superhacking AI, lawmakers warn \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Europe is not at the table,&#8221; said Bart Groothuis, a Dutch liberal lawmaker and one of the letter\u2019s signatories. &#8220;I think that we should shake the tree much, much harder.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Parliament\u2019s internal market committee invited\u00a0Anthropic to join a public hearing later this week, but the company said it was &#8220;unable to accept&#8221; the invitation to attend the hearing &#8220;at short notice,&#8221; according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.politico.eu\/news\/217705\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">statement shared with POLITICO<\/a> on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The lawmakers who signed the letter argued the European Union should reform its rules around the disclosure of cyber flaws and how they are fixed. They also urged the EU executive to prioritize the protection of &#8220;crown jewels,&#8221;\u00a0like critical sector operators.<\/p>\n<p>They pushed for the EU&#8217;s cyber agency ENISA to get access to Mythos and other models to scrutinize the risks.<\/p>\n<p>Lawmakers are already eyeing an ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.politico.eu\/bills\/756290\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">reform of the EU\u2019s Cybersecurity Act<\/a> to respond to the new threats, according to Groothuis, who previously served as a senior cybersecurity official in the Dutch government. The chief lawmaker on that bill, Czech Pirate Party member Mark\u00e9ta Gregorov\u00e1, also signed Monday&#8217;s letter.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier said in a statement the Commission has had \u201cnumerous\u201d technical meetings with Anthropic since August 2025 to work with the firm on implementing the EU\u2019s AI code of practice, which helps industry comply with requirements under the AI Act. The Commission has also held \u201cseveral meetings\u201d with the company to discuss Mythos specifically, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce the enforcement powers of the AI Office start in August 2026, we will ensure to receive, if needed, model access,\u201d Regnier said.
