(Chaim Goldberg\/Flash90)<\/p>\n<p>Belgium\u2019s top diplomat said the accusation was defamatory and that he would be happy to come to Israel to discuss the issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough with these caricatures,\u201d Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot wrote on X.<\/p>\n<p>He said Belgium\u2019s judiciary acts independently and without political interference, noting the case was initiated by \u201crepresentatives of the Jewish community themselves.\u201d He rejected claims that Belgium was undermining Jewish religious freedom, saying such rights are protected by the constitution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince you yourself recently urged against conducting diplomacy via Twitter,\u201d Prevot said in reference to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/saar-scolds-ukraine-for-doing-twitter-diplomacy-but-he-does-just-the-same-as-does-everyone-else\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sa\u2019ar\u2019s recent online spat<\/a> with Ukrainian officials, \u201cI suggest that we discuss all these issues during a meeting in Israel at a time that suits you best, to put an end to any misinterpretations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sa\u2019ar responded that Prevot\u2019s comments \u201ccompletely miss the point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere should never have been such an investigation, had the issue of Brit Milah been regulated like in other European countries that respect Jewish religious freedom,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/static-cdn.toi-media.com\/www\/uploads\/2026\/04\/AP26111323832845.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3807016\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/AP26111323832845-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n\t\tBelgium\u2019s Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot speaks with the media as he arrives for a meeting of EU foreign ministers at the European Council building in Luxembourg, April 21, 2026. (AP Photo\/Virginia Mayo)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEspecially so in a country with one of the oldest Jewish communities in Europe,\u201d Sa\u2019ar continued. \u201cHad Belgium had a strategic plan to fight antisemitism and foster Jewish life, you might have known this. Alas, it doesn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>US Ambassador to Belgium Bill White also condemned the decision, calling it \u201ca shameful stain on Belgium.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe prosecution of these religious figures (mohels), one of whom is American, is WRONG and won\u2019t be tolerated,\u201d he wrote on X. \u201cBelgium will be thought of now as anti-Semitic by the world.
