Japan’s Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako will make official visits to the Netherlands and Belgium next month.<\/p>\n
It was decided at Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting that the Emperor and Empress will accept invitations from King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands and Belgium’s King Philippe.<\/p>\n
The couple will depart from Tokyo’s Haneda Airport on June 13 aboard a government plane for the Dutch capital, Amsterdam.<\/p>\n
They will travel to the Belgian capital of Brussels on June 20, and return home on June 26.<\/p>\n
During their stay in the two countries, the Emperor and Empress will attend welcome ceremonies and royal banquets as state guests. They are also scheduled to lay flowers at memorials for the war dead.<\/p>\n
Japan’s imperial family has maintained close ties with both the Dutch and Belgian royal families.<\/p>\n
The Emperor and Empress made a private visit to the Netherlands in 2006, when they were crown prince and princess. They were accompanied by their daughter, Princess Aiko.<\/p>\n
In 2013, they made an official visit to the country to attend King Willem-Alexander’s enthronement ceremony.<\/p>\n
Japan and Belgium are marking the 160th anniversary of diplomatic relations this year.<\/p>\n
The then crown prince and princess made an official visit there in 1999 to attend the wedding of then Crown Prince Philippe.<\/p>\n
