{"id":15527,"date":"2026-05-13T15:12:31","date_gmt":"2026-05-13T15:12:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/be\/15527\/"},"modified":"2026-05-13T15:12:31","modified_gmt":"2026-05-13T15:12:31","slug":"hands-off-our-pensions-belgian-workers-take-to-the-streets-in-general-strike-against-austerity-measures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/be\/15527\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Hands Off Our Pensions&#8217;: Belgian Workers Take to the Streets in General Strike Against Austerity Measures"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Much of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/belgium\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Belgium<\/a> ground to a halt on Tuesday as tens of thousands of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/workers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">workers<\/a> flooded the streets of Brussels as part of a general strike against government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/austerity\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">austerity<\/a> measures.<\/p>\n<p>Schools closed, public transit operated with reduced service, and flights out of major airports were grounded as workers walked off the job. Instead, they marched through the capital clad in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brusselstimes.com\/belgium\/2127849\/national-strike-between-40000-and-75000-workers-protest-on-streets-of-brussels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">red and green<\/a>, the colors of Belgium&#8217;s major labor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/unions\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">unions<\/a>, with some carrying signs that read, &#8220;Hands off our pensions&#8221; and &#8220;We will not pay the price of their wars.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/morningstaronline.co.uk\/article\/general-strike-brings-much-belgium-standstill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Morning Star<\/a>, as many as 100,000 people took part in the strike, which was called by the nation&#8217;s three biggest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/trade\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">trade<\/a> unions in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/protest\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">protest<\/a> of measures by Prime Minister Bart De Wever&#8217;s government that the unions say slash pensions, reduce wages, and attack collective bargaining.<\/p>\n<p>The marchers called on the government to roll back plans to raise Belgium&#8217;s retirement age to 67 and have called for an end to what the unions have dubbed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.belganewsagency.eu\/pension-reform-row-fuels-anger-ahead-of-brussels-union-protest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u201cpension penalty\u201d<\/a> that would cut benefits for those who retire early.<\/p>\n<p>Amid rising costs caused by the US-Israeli war against Iran, the unions are also outraged by a proposed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brusselstimes.com\/2127027\/belgian-government-says-it-will-stick-to-new-capped-wage-indexation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">temporary cap<\/a> on wage indexation, which requires wages to rise in tandem with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/inflation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">inflation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s part of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2026\/03\/12\/belgium-has-been-on-strike-for-months-with-over-80000-people-taking-to-the-streets-today-to-protest-against-government-reforms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">broader trend<\/a> of the government loosening labor rules for employers, which unions say has led to longer, more irregular hours and diminished employees&#8217;
