Belgian prosecutors accused<\/a> Davignon, then a young diplomat attached to the foreign ministry, of involvement in Lumumba\u2019s unlawful detention and transfer<\/a>, and of subjecting him to \u201chumiliating and degrading treatment.\u201d He was also accused in connection with the killings of Lumumba\u2019s allies Maurice Mpolo and Joseph Okito.<\/p>\n

Davignon denied<\/a> the allegations. A Belgian parliamentary inquiry<\/a> concluded in 2002 that Belgium was \u201cmorally responsible\u201d for Lumumba\u2019s death.<\/p>\n

The case has become central<\/a> to Belgium\u2019s long and uneasy reckoning with its colonial past. In 2022, the Belgian government formally returned to Lumumba\u2019s family the only known part of his remains \u2014 a tooth<\/a> kept for decades by a Belgian policeman involved in disposing of his body.<\/p>\n
