Budapest is seeking to reset strained ties with Brussels after years of confrontation under the ousted former leader Viktor Orb\u00e1n.<\/p>\n

Magyar, whose centrist movement swept to victory in Hungary\u2019s election last month, is seeking to unlock billions in EU funds frozen over Budapest\u2019s breaches of EU law under Orb\u00e1n, who governed the country for 16 consecutive years. <\/p>\n

Unlocking \u20ac10.4 billion in EU post-pandemic recovery funds is the Magyar government\u2019s top priority, Foreign Minister Orb\u00e1n \u2014 no relation of the former leader \u2014\u00a0told POLITICO.<\/p>\n

The release of the funds is contingent on Hungary meeting specific reform criteria, the Commission said. Budapest is racing to fulfill the requirements<\/a> needed to qualify for the cash, which it must formally request by Aug. 31.<\/p>\n

Magyar\u00a0has\u00a0said\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0a \u201cpolitical agreement\u201d on the release\u00a0of\u00a0the frozen funds, while a Commission official told POLITICO\u2019s Brussels Playbook<\/a> on Tuesday that a handful of technical issues remained unresolved.<\/p>\n

The new Hungarian leader met with von der Leyen in Brussels in April<\/a> to kick off negotiations for unlocking the cash before the deadline.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, Magyar will also hold talks with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte in Brussels, the alliance confirmed on Wednesday. He will also meet Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever, according to a Belgian government official.<\/p>\n
