TagEnergy has brought a 240MW/480MWh system online in France, while Iberdrola has activated a 58MW/120MWh facility in Spain, both representing the largest installations in their respective countries.

France’s largest BESS

TagEnergy’s Cernay-les-Reims project, co-owned with Banque des Territoires, is the company’s first in France and surpasses the previous record-holder, the 100MW/200MWh Chevire BESS. The system uses Tesla Megapacks and involves partners including TSO Reseau de Transport d’Electricite, SICAE EST, the Municipality of Cernay-les-Reims, and the Grand Reims metropolitan area. Large-scale BESS activity in France has accelerated over the past year, driven by ancillary services and grid balancing opportunities. Developers Neoen, Engie, and Harmony Energy recently began construction on projects totaling nearly 1GWh combined.

Iberdrola’s Spanish milestone

Iberdrola’s Spanish project is co-located with the Campo Aranuelo solar complex in Caceres and consists of two separate BESS units, each around 60MWh, paired with the Campo Aranuelo I and II solar plants. This is part of a broader surge in large-scale BESS activity in Spain, where the April 2025 Iberian blackout underscored the importance of grid stability. Just two days ago, a 1.5GWh order from CATL was reported for Grenergy’s two projects in Spain, and several other developers—including Engie, Return, FRV, and Zelestra—have advanced projects to construction this year. In January, Iberdrola commissioned two similarly sized systems to its Caceres units, all part of a portfolio launched in January 2024. Those four projects were among 1.9GWh of storage awarded grants under the PERTE tender, which helped jumpstart Spain’s large-scale market.

Engie breaks ground in Belgium

Engie and NHOA Energy have officially started construction on a 320MWh BESS at Engie’s Drogenbos power station near Brussels. The project secured a 15-year revenue contract through Belgium’s fifth Capacity Remuneration Mechanism auction. Engie hired NHOA in December 2025; NHOA was formerly part of the Engie group, and the two have previously collaborated on a 400MWh project in Belgium. Engie has used Sungrow for its other Belgian project. Belgium has been a first-mover in continental European storage due to long-term CRM revenues and a favorable regulatory regime, including exemptions for charge-discharge grid fees. That exemption will be phased out for projects signing grid connection agreements after 1 April 2026.

ACL Energy projects in Italy

Qualitas Energy, through its Qualitas Energy Credit Fund, is providing project financing for two BESS projects in Italy developed by ACL Energy. The projects total 211MW, with 4-hour and 8-hour durations, located in Lombardy and Apulia. They have long-term revenue contracts via the capacity market and MACSE auctions. The Apulia project is likely the one that bid 706MWh of capacity into MACSE. The projects are owned by ACL Energy and an industrial majority shareholder, possibly BW ESS, which has partnered with ACL on a 2.9GW pipeline in Italy. The conclusion of MACSE in September allowed Italy’s grid-scale BESS market to take off, providing long-term revenues and a pricing reference. Neoen has also started construction on a 25MW/100MWh project in Italy.

German projects advance

In Germany, developer Chint Solar Europe has started construction on a 12MW/40MWh BESS in Weissenfels, expected to be commissioned soon, with a second phase planned for 2027 that will double its capacity. The company has 40 projects in Germany scheduled for commissioning between now and 2030, delivered with in-house EPC services. Meanwhile, Nordic Solar, a Denmark-based developer, has put an 11MW/22MWh project into operation in Tiste, Lower Saxony.

Interactive table based on the Store Companies dataset for this report.

    Sort: Rank
Sort: Company A-Z
Sort: Headquarters A-Z

     #
Company
Headquarters
Focus
Scale
Note

      1
Contemporary Amperex Technology Co.
