The ship is the first of three such vessels scheduled for delivery to Exmar this year, with a fourth expected in early 2027. Each vessel has a total capacity of 46,000 cubic meters of ammonia and is designed as an ammonia gas carrier that can also use ammonia as fuel.<\/p>\n<p>The development project for these ships began in 2022, involving collaboration between Exmar, HD Hyundai, Hyundai Mipo (recently merged with <a href=\"https:\/\/app.indexbox.io\/companies\/profile\/651827\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">HD Hyundai Heavy Industries<\/a> in Ulsan), WinGD, Nord Gas Solutions (formerly Wartsila Gas Solutions), and Lloyds Register. Exmar worked closely with the Belgian administration and Lloyds Register to establish the international framework and regulations permitting ammonia as a marine fuel on a gas carrier, as previous regulations did not allow toxic cargoes like ammonia to be used as fuel on such vessels.<\/p>\n<p>WinGD developed a 52-bore engine for the vessel, built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Engine and Machinery Business Unit. The engine, installed in the summer of 2025, features high-pressure ammonia injection with a low pilot fuel dose of around five percent at full load. It delivers load handling, dynamic response, and fuel efficiency comparable to WinGD&#8217;s equivalent diesel-fueled X Engines in both ammonia and diesel operating modes.<\/p>\n<p>The first two ships, named Antwerpen and Arlon after two Belgian cities, each measure 190 meters (623 feet) in length and are 27,000 deadweight tons. They were designed for transporting liquefied gas cargoes, including ammonia and LPG. Exmar noted that the vessels were deliberately lengthened by 10 meters (approximately 33 feet) during the design stage, with a slight increase in beam, to achieve a higher cargo intake compared to the standard design. Hyundai developed proprietary technology for three tanks providing 45,000 cubic meters of storage below deck, plus two 500-cubic-meter deck tanks.<\/p>\n<p>HD Hyundai highlighted that ammonia can be stored in pressurized tanks at around 8 bar or in refrigerated tanks at -33 degrees Celsius without cryogenic technology. In liquid form, it has about 1.7 times higher storage density than liquefied hydrogen at the same volume, making it suitable for large-scale, long-distance transport and storage of hydrogen. The vessels are projected to lower emissions by up to 90 percent compared to conventional ships.<\/p>\n<p>Exmar expressed confidence that the knowledge, technology, and operational experience from these ships will help accelerate the adoption of ammonia as a marine fuel, with lessons learned expected to apply to many other vessel types. The Antwerpen completed delivery and departed from Ulsan bound for Zhoushan, China. Its sister ship Arlon will be delivered in the coming months, and a third, unnamed vessel will be delivered before the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Data from DNV&#8217;s Alternative Fuels Insights database indicates there are only three small converted vessels\u2014two tugs and an offshore supply vessel\u2014capable of ammonia-fueled operations. However, CMP.TECH&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/app.indexbox.io\/companies\/profile\/636839\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Bocimar<\/a> division will soon follow with the first ammonia-fueled bulker.
