The incident, reported by The Maritime Executive, occurred on Tuesday afternoon, June 9, at the DP World Terminal in the Deurganckdok section of the port.

The containership involved was the COSCO Hope, a 13,100 TEU vessel built in 2012 and owned by Seaspan. It was docked at the terminal, which is the primary container handling area for Antwerp and is considered one of the largest in Europe, handling roughly two-thirds of all container traffic at the port.

At around 1600 on Tuesday, the vessel was loading and unloading containers when a stack of four boxes still tied together toppled off without warning. The containers fell onto the bunker vessel Mati, which was alongside to fuel the containership. No injuries were reported.

The boxes landed on the deck of the Mati, causing significant damage. A small fuel leak was also reported from the bunker vessel. The Mati is a 110-meter self-propelled bunker vessel registered in Germany.

The four boxes remained tied together after the fall, though the top two boxes in the stack were damaged. The top box was heavily twisted and misshapen, breaking open and spilling some contents onto the deck of the bunker vessel. The second box from the top was also dented and broken open, spilling its contents. The lower two boxes showed less damage and appeared to remain sealed.

Authorities reported that the terminal was able to continue operations while recovering from the incident. The boxes were removed, and the bunker vessel was repositioned. The COSCO Hope was permitted to depart Antwerp on Wednesday morning and, as of late on Thursday, was in the anchorage off Rotterdam.

 1.
