Two weeks ago, the director of Haren Prison in northern Brussels <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebulletin.be\/haren-prison-boss-quits-protest-against-overcrowding\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.thebulletin.be\/haren-prison-boss-quits-protest-against-overcrowding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">resigned<\/a> due to frustrations over the conditions and staffing shortages. Belgium prison staff have also repeatedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.belganewsagency.eu\/belgian-prison-staff-strike-over-overcrowding\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.belganewsagency.eu\/belgian-prison-staff-strike-over-overcrowding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">staged strikes<\/a> in recent months.<\/p>\n<p>A mid-May <a href=\"https:\/\/ctrg.belgium.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Jaarverslag-2025-van-de-CTRG.pdf\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/ctrg.belgium.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Jaarverslag-2025-van-de-CTRG.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">report<\/a> by a prison oversight body found that Belgium\u2019s prison population had risen sharply over the past three years, from around 11,000 prisoners at the beginning of 2023 to more than 13,000 at the beginning of this year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vrt.be\/vrtnws\/nl\/2026\/05\/15\/jaarverslag-toezichtsraad-gevangeniswezen-kroniek-van-een-aange\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.vrt.be\/vrtnws\/nl\/2026\/05\/15\/jaarverslag-toezichtsraad-gevangeniswezen-kroniek-van-een-aange\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Belgian media<\/a> linked the increase to a government decision requiring prison sentences of up to three years be served more consistently. The oversight body\u2019s report backs this view, showing that the numbers of prisoners sentenced for up to three years increased from around 400 in 2023 to around 1,500 in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coe.int\/en\/web\/about-us\/our-member-states\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.coe.int\/en\/web\/about-us\/our-member-states\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Council of Europe<\/a>, Belgium should not build more prisons but lower the number of detainees in general. It suggests the country reduce its use and length of pretrial detention.<\/p>\n<p>The debate comes as Belgium faces <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/antwerp-judge-belgium-evolving-narco-state\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/antwerp-judge-belgium-evolving-narco-state\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a rise in drug-related crime<\/a>. As a consequence, the government has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/belgium-deploys-soldiers-to-protect-jewish-sites-and-combat-crime\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/belgium-deploys-soldiers-to-protect-jewish-sites-and-combat-crime\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">deployed soldiers<\/a> in cities to help police combat criminal activity.<\/p>\n<p>Belgian Interior Minister Bernard Quintin did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the Council of Europe\u2019s recommendations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Packed prisons have been a recurring topic in Belgium for months.
