\"<p>TheThe entity that runs Europe\u2019s second largest port is looking into all possibilities.MUMBAI: The Port of Antwerp-Bruges<\/a> is in talks with Indian companies, including the Adani Group<\/a>, to help entities operating from Europe\u2019s second largest port to source green fuels<\/a> and comply with the European Union regulations<\/a> and legislations, said Johan Klaps, Chair of the Board of Directors of Port of Antwerp-Bruges.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe just cannot produce green hydrogen<\/a> ourselves. We need partners to do this, whether they come from South America, Africa or Asia, we will need to import it. So, there is a big market evolving there. It’s coming up and what we try to do is be well positioned for everyone so that the fuel you want as a company in our port can be available. A multi-fuel approach<\/a> is what we do,\u201d Klaps said.<\/p>\n

The entity that runs Europe\u2019s second largest port is looking into all possibilities.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe’re not today in a phase where we’re talking concretely with one or the other companies to do this. For example, Adani has already presented itself as a possible partner and they already do business in Antwerp. So, they’re coming over and discuss this further with us,\u201d Klaps disclosed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey will do it independently. The basic approach currently is that we are a public authority, so we remain neutral to all parties and what we want to create is actually a gateway for those green molecules,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n

China has a big leap forward on green flows.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut if you look at the speed at which India is shifting towards green energy, all kinds of forms and ways, it’s impressive. So, we really want to understand what’s happening here and therefore we look at what the Indian market gives. But our basic proposal is to create infrastructure and also the capabilities to accept those green molecules into Europe. I think we have been doing a good job there, focusing first on Chinese volumes and now also on Indian volumes. So, the next big thing for us is to see how we can create stable flows towards Europe and also to support our industry, which has a challenge of energy and energy at the right cost. And also allowing to create the transition program for our industrial cluster, which is the biggest petrochemical cluster outside of Houston. For us, it’s key to also foresee that transition for the future,\u201d Klaps pointed out.<\/p>\n

Being a public authority, the Port of Antwerp-Bruges looks at offers made by private companies to see whether it fits into the port\u2019s strategy.<\/p>\n

Then you’re welcome if you can present your case and if it’s good, we will accept it, whether it’s Adani or another company from India or other countries.<\/p>\n

Stating that there is a demand for green hydrogen in Antwerp, Klaps said that Adani could be one of the companies filling the void that\u2019s coming up.<\/p>\n

Because of EU regulations and legislations, the fossil fuel-based industry in Europe has to shift to greener fuels.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is a big energy problem in Europe; the cost of energy is high and there is a transition agenda which is being pushed by the EU, saying you need to focus more on green fuels. So, the transition of the complex industrial system that’s a major challenge for us because the petrochemical industry<\/a> in Antwerp is based on fossil fuels. So, what we think is necessary is that we connect with parties throughout the world to see where there is a stable and market viable supply of those green fuels. Whatever molecule, hydrogen can be one, ammonia can be another one,\u201d Klaps said.<\/p>\n

The port authority has decided that the shift will be carried out in a pragmatic, economically viable way.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor that, we need to adopt a multi-fuel and multi-energy approach. Green hydrogen can be one of the main flows supporting that transition but in a stable pragmatic way. It’s a challenge for Europe but it’s also an opportunity for India to make that connections in Antwerp-Bruges,\u201d Klaps stated.<\/p>\n

The Port of Antwerp-Bruges has to maintain its industrial core which is key to the existence of Antwerp port and then allow the companies operating inside the port to make the shift to green energy.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we try to do is connect that demand from the industrial cluster in Antwerp, which is quite important for the whole of Europe, with the supply that you are creating here in India,\u201d he added.\n <\/p>\n
