There, the Persian national team could meet the United States, creating one of the most politically charged fixtures of the entire World Cup.

The American national team has already secured first place in Group D and booked its place in the knockout rounds. Iran, meanwhile, enters the second round of group matches under pressure after being held to a disappointing 2–2 draw by New Zealand. With all four teams in Group G level on one point after the opening matches, the race remains wide open.

In the Round of 32, the winner of Group D will face the runner-up in Group G—and Iran has a realistic chance of finishing in that position. Pre-tournament predictions consistently identified Belgium as the group favourite, with Iran and Egypt competing for the remaining qualification spot.

While the draw against New Zealand made the road to the next round significantly more difficult, the arithmetic remains relatively straightforward. A victory over Belgium followed by a draw or better against Egypt would likely secure progression. Even four points from the remaining two matches could prove sufficient, depending on other results and goal difference. Given the balance of the group, a second-place finish remains a realistic scenario, particularly if Iran can take points from the Belgium match.

Like Iran, Belgium’s campaign has also begun below expectations. The Red Devils were held to a 1–1 draw by Egypt in their opening match, struggling to convert possession into clear chances and failing to demonstrate the dominance many expected from the group favourites.

Unlike most potential Round of 32 ties, a US–Iran match would carry significance extending far beyond football. Neither side is considered among the favourites to lift the trophy, yet few matches could rival the political symbolism and international attention such a fixture would attract.

The matchup would come as the United States and Iran remain in a state of confrontation following the events of 28 February, when Tel Aviv and Washington launched coordinated air strikes against Tehran that killed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader. The attack triggered immediate Iranian retaliation against Israeli and US targets across the Persian Gulf and the broader Middle East, as well as the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important trade and energy corridors.

US President Donald Trump, who campaigned on a promise not to start new wars, is now seeking to reach an agreement with Tehran as the midterm elections approach in the autumn. Hours before kick-off, Vice President JD Vance arrived in Switzerland on Sunday for high-level talks with Iranian officials aimed at building on a memorandum of understanding reached last week and negotiating a broader peace agreement between the two countries.

Such a matchup in an already heavily politicized World Cup would almost certainly attract extraordinary global attention. The two nations have met twice before at the World Cup: in 1998, when Iran secured a historic 2–1 victory, and in 2022, when the United States emerged victorious.

Related articles:

[4
7,381,3933,12179,10451,3164,3802,13883,87
post-22931","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-belgium","tag-belgium","tag-donald-trump","tag-fifa-world-cup","tag-group-d","tag-group-g","tag-iran","tag-iran-war","tag-knockout","tag-united-states
["GET
