The appeal was detailed in a statement released this week by the European Community Shipowners&#8217; Associations (ECSA) and Airlines for Europe (A4E), as reported by Splash247.<\/p>\n<p>The organisations noted that shipping and aviation together contribute <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indexbox.io\/store\/european-union\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">more than 11 billion euros<\/a> annually to the European Union Emissions Trading System (ETS). However, they argued that a significant portion of these funds is not being reinvested into the sustainable fuels and technologies necessary to reduce emissions. The groups urged the European Commission and EU member states to allocate at least a portion of ETS revenues to support the production and adoption of low-carbon fuels, which remain considerably more expensive than conventional options.<\/p>\n<p>ECSA stated that shipping alone contributes around 9 billion euros to the EU ETS. The association&#8217;s secretary-general commented that this money should be used at both EU and national levels to bridge the price gap and support sustainable fuel availability and clean technology projects. According to ECSA, European shipowners currently hold 44 percent of the global orderbook for vessels capable of running on alternative fuels. Nevertheless, Europe lags behind Asia in fuel production projects, accounting for just 10 percent of planned capacity compared to 74 percent in Asia.<\/p>\n<p>Airlines expressed similar concerns. A4E&#8217;s managing director indicated that airlines contributed 2.3 billion euros to the ETS in 2024 and warned that the figure could exceed 5 billion euros annually by 2030. She added that airlines\u2014and ultimately passengers\u2014are paying into a system that is not working for them or for the climate.<\/p>\n<p>The joint statement follows remarks made weeks earlier by the European commissioner for sustainable transport and tourism, who told delegates at Posidonia that shipping ETS revenues should be recycled into clean fuels, propulsion systems, and other decarbonisation technologies rather than becoming a general source of government income.
