The Belgian state banquet was hosted at the Royal Castle of Laeken, the official residence of the Belgian royal family in Brussels.<\/p>\n<p>The banquet also marked one of the first major diplomatic occasions for Belgium&#8217;s Princess Elisabeth, who personally greeted the Emperor and Empress at the airport upon their arrival, since <a data-ylk=\"slk:completing her graduate studies at Harvard University;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.townandcountrymag.com\/society\/tradition\/a71423422\/princess-elisabeth-belgium-harvard-graduation-2026\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">completing her graduate studies at Harvard University<\/a> last month. The 24-year-old crown princess earned a master&#8217;s degree in public policy from Harvard&#8217;s John F. Kennedy School of Government, having previously graduated with a bachelor&#8217;s degree in history and politics from Lincoln College at Oxford University in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Belgium and Japan&#8217;s alliance dates to the Treaty of Amity, Commerce and Navigation signed in 1866. According to <a data-ylk=\"slk:Belgium&#039;s diplomatic service;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/2026\/06\/23\/japans-emperor-and-empress-arrive-in-belgium-for-state-visit\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Belgium&#8217;s diplomatic service<\/a>, more than 280 Japanese companies operate in Belgium, supporting nearly 30,000 jobs across sectors including automotive, logistics, chemicals, and biotechnology. Japan ranks as Belgium&#8217;s 25th-largest export market and its fourth-largest non-European supplier.<\/p>\n<p>The stop in Belgium follows a high-profile visit to the Netherlands, where the imperial couple were hosted by King Willem-Alexander and Queen M\u00e1xima. In addition to <a data-ylk=\"slk:the state banquet in Amsterdam;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.townandcountrymag.com\/society\/tradition\/a71627365\/netherlands-japan-state-banquet-tiaras-ariane-debut-photos\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">the state banquet in Amsterdam<\/a> last week, <a data-ylk=\"slk:the two royal couples gathered at Het Oude Loo;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.townandcountrymag.com\/society\/tradition\/a71590167\/japan-netherlands-royals-world-cup-2026\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">the two royal couples gathered at Het Oude Loo<\/a>, the Dutch royal family&#8217;s weekend palace, to watch Japan&#8217;s opening <a data-ylk=\"slk:2026 World Cup;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.townandcountrymag.com\/world-cup-2026\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">2026 World Cup<\/a> match against the Netherlands together.
