{"id":28722,"date":"2026-07-14T14:56:22","date_gmt":"2026-07-14T14:56:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/be\/28722\/"},"modified":"2026-07-14T14:56:22","modified_gmt":"2026-07-14T14:56:22","slug":"several-dead-in-fire-at-brussels-construction-site-authorities-say-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/be\/28722\/","title":{"rendered":"Several dead in fire at Brussels construction site, authorities say"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">BRUSSELS, July 14 (Reuters) &#8211; Several people have died in a fire at a construction site in \u200cBrussels on Tuesday, with a search for \u200csix missing persons ongoing, local authorities said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">An unspecified number of bodies \u200bhad been found in one of two elevators at the large renovation project on the central Place de Brouckere where a fire broke out early on Tuesday, a \u200cspokesman for the \u2060local labour inspection service said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;We had small access to one of the two elevator \u2060cabinets and there we had a view that there are some corpses of two or three people who \u200bdied,&#8221; spokesman \u200bBrecht Speybrouck told Reuters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">He \u200bsaid a total of \u200csix workers were unaccounted for and that it was unclear what had caused the fire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The local fire brigade said more than 200 workers had been on the site when the fire broke out and that three \u200cpeople had been taken to \u200ba hospital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">An initial fire at \u200bthe lower floors of \u200bthe renovation project was contained relatively \u200cquickly, Belgian broadcaster VRT said, \u200bciting the fire \u200bbrigade.
