{"id":28970,"date":"2026-07-16T00:08:06","date_gmt":"2026-07-16T00:08:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/be\/28970\/"},"modified":"2026-07-16T00:08:06","modified_gmt":"2026-07-16T00:08:06","slug":"toxic-leak-deepens-congestion-at-europes-second-busiest-port","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/be\/28970\/","title":{"rendered":"Toxic Leak Deepens Congestion at Europe&#8217;s Second-Busiest Port"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/sourcing-journal\/logistics\/port-of-antwerp-bruges-oil-spill-msc-denmark-disrupts-container-shipping-europe-european-congestion-vesselbot-1238908101\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Port of Antwerp-Bruges<\/a> closed two terminals Tuesday night after a shipping container leaked toxic chemicals on a vessel docked at the gateway, hospitalizing dozens of workers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tA container of hydrofluoric acid was damaged and began leaking aboard the <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/tag\/mediterranean-shipping-company-msc\/\" id=\"auto-tag_mediterranean-shipping-company-msc\" data-tag=\"mediterranean-shipping-company-msc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC)<\/a> cargo ship MSC Mia Summer II at the port\u2019s Deurganck Dock. As a result, shipping traffic was temporarily suspended at DP World\u2019s Antwerp Gateway and MSC-PSA European Terminal (MPET).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAuthorities also closed the bridges over the nearby Kieldrecht Lock, which is one of two locks that give vessels access to the docks from the Scheldt River, and urged people to avoid the area around MPET\u2019s Quay 1742.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tEmergency services evacuated everyone from the vessel and the surrounding quay after the leak was detected and carried out air quality measurements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAs of 3:30 p.m. local time Wednesday, the port confirmed that DP World Antwerp Gateway terminal had been reopened, but the MPET remained closed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLocal authorities in nearby Beveren-Kruibeke-Zwijndrech indicated that 155 people were taken to the hospital. While most were discharged, 28 exhibiting more serious symptoms remained under observation in hospital as of Wednesday morning local time. One person was receiving intensive care.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tNo local residents were affected by the fumes, Beveren-Kruibeke-Zwijndrecht mayor Marc Van de Vijver said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSpecialist teams were on standby to remove the container from the vessel, according to the port.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBelgium\u2019s federal prosecutor\u2019s office, the Openbaar Ministerie, launched a criminal investigation into the incident Wednesday. According to the office, the incident occurred during container loading and unloading operations, although the investigation has yet to determine the exact cause.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThis is the second such incident involving a leak at the Belgian port in recent months. In April, an oil spill occurred at the dock when the MSC Denmark VI vessel attempted to refuel. That spillage ended up blocking the access route from the port to the North Sea, forcing the temporary closure of the Deurganck Dock and the MPET.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThese backlogs are impactful to the flow of cargo in and out of western <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/tag\/europe\/\" id=\"auto-tag_europe\" data-tag=\"europe\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Europe<\/a>. Antwerp-Bruges is the second-busiest port on the continent behind the Netherlands\u2019 Port of Rotterdam, handling 13.6 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIts tonnage surpasses the largest port in the U.S., the <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/sourcing-journal\/logistics\/port-of-los-angeles-forecasts-7-percent-2027-cargo-decline-trade-uncertainty-1239013629\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Port of Los Angeles<\/a>, which saw roughly 10.2 million TEUs flow through its terminals last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe brief closure at Antwerp came just days after operations at two of the most pivotal <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/tag\/ports\/\" id=\"auto-tag_ports\" data-tag=\"ports\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ports<\/a> worldwide were forced to shutter temporarily due to Typhoon Bavi. Container handling operations at China\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/sourcing-journal\/logistics\/typhoon-bavi-temporary-shutdown-china-shanghai-ningbo-ports-seko-logistics-1239065079\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Ports of Shanghai and Ningbo<\/a> were halted over the weekend amid the torrential rainfall and heavy winds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOperations at those gateways largely resumed by Monday. But the storm resulted in more than 2 million TEUs of vessel capacity waiting at berth in north Asian waters outside the two <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/sourcing-journal\/logistics\/nrf-us-container-imports-july-retailers-rush-tariffs-back-to-school-peak-season-1239061183\/\" id=\"related_article_link_ports\" data-tag=\"ports\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ports<\/a>, according to a report from container shipping market research firm Linerlytica.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe report estimates that vessel backlog will take \u201cseveral weeks\u201d to clear.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAntwerp had already seen congestion of its own in recent weeks, with Kuehne + Nagel reporting Monday that the seven-day average vessel waiting time to dock at the port is 2.02 days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn early June, Belgian maritime harbor pilots went on strike stemming from a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/sourcing-journal\/logistics\/rotterdam-antwerp-port-congestion-labor-strike-vessel-backlogs-europe-dockworkers-lashers-pilots-labor-dispute-1238858483\/\">longstanding dispute<\/a> with lawmakers over federal pension reforms. The pilots, who help captains guide cargo ships into the port, have conducted various labor actions since last fall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tVessels had more difficulty berthing at docks during the latest strike, which led to operational challenges even after their conclusion such as irregular peaks in container volumes and a longer queue of vessels entering and leaving the port.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tCompounding these matters, Belgium\u2019s annual construction holiday period from July 13-31 will reduce staff availability across all terminals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cVessel backlogs continue to affect the lineup and are expected to persist through this week,\u201d said Kuehne + Nagel in an update Tuesday. \u201cLabor availability has also been reduced by the start of the school holiday period.
