Trump targets EU fines<\/p>\n

President Donald Trump threatened the European Union with new tariffs and a trade investigation after Brussels imposed a \u20ac890 million fine on Google under the European Digital Markets Act, and he framed the move as retaliation for what he called \u201cillegal and highly unethical conduct.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a Truth Social post, Trump said, \u201cThe European Union will pay a very big price for this illegal and highly unethical conduct,\u201d and he added that the \u201cpenalties will be entirely reversed\u201d with a \u201csubstantial TARIFF\u201d coming \u201cat the earliest possible moment.\u201d<\/p>\n

ABC reported that Trump announced \u201cnuevas subidas de aranceles a la Uni\u00f3n Europea\u201d in response to fines imposed on large U.S. companies \u201ccomo Apple, Amazon o Meta,\u201d and it said the Google-related figure cited by Trump totals \u201cm\u00e1s de 18.000 millones de d\u00f3lares.\u201d<\/p>\n

BBC said Trump also threatened to \u201cimmediately initiate a 301 investigation\u201d over European regulators\u2019 alleged practice of \u201crobbing American companies and, in turn, the American taxpayer,\u201d citing Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 as the legal basis for the response.<\/p>\n

EU and tech responses<\/p>\n

The European Commission\u2019s vice president for digital affairs, Henna Virkkunen, said the Google decision was \u201ca very important decision\u201d aimed to \u201cguarantee a level playing field\u201d for online companies, according to BFM.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s threats were tied to the EU\u2019s sanction against Google for anti-competitive conduct in online search and within the Google Play app store, with BFM describing the \u20ac890 million penalty as the highest under the Digital Markets Act.<\/p>\n

Jos\u00e9 Casta\u00f1eda, a spokesman for Google, told the BBC that the company had \u201cworked hard to comply\u201d with Europe\u2019s Digital Markets Act but \u201chad expressed our concerns about the impact of recent EC decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n

The BBC also reported that it was \u201cnot clear where the figures cited by Trump come from,\u201d after Trump claimed Apple had received EU fines of $15bn, Meta fines of $3bn, and Amazon fines of $2.5bn.<\/p>\n

What happens next<\/p>\n

The retaliation threat is linked to Section 301 mechanisms described in multiple outlets, including that the U.S. would launch an investigation and potentially impose tariffs after determining foreign practices are unfair, with BBC noting that Section 301 gives the Office of the United States Trade Representative power to react and investigate.<\/p>\n
