{"id":30350,"date":"2026-07-26T00:27:08","date_gmt":"2026-07-26T00:27:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/be\/30350\/"},"modified":"2026-07-26T00:27:08","modified_gmt":"2026-07-26T00:27:08","slug":"nato-intern-arrested-in-belgium-over-suspected-espionage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/be\/30350\/","title":{"rendered":"NATO intern arrested in Belgium over suspected espionage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Canadian woman of Chinese origin who worked as an intern at NATO\u2019s European military headquarters in Belgium has been arrested on suspicion of spying for an unnamed country and participating in a criminal organization.<\/p>\n<p>The woman, who has not been identified, was ordered detained on Friday after police searched her home and workplace, according to Belgium\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.om-mp.be\/sites\/default\/files\/media\/documents\/2026-07-25_Communique_persbericht%20-%20SHAPE.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Federal Prosecutor\u2019s Office<\/a>. She worked at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in Mons, about 40 miles southwest of Brussels.<\/p>\n<p>The suspect came to the attention of SHAPE\u2019s security services, which reported her to Belgium\u2019s General Intelligence and Security Service (SGRS).<\/p>\n<p>Because espionage cases fall under the Federal Public Prosecutor\u2019s Office, the matter was referred to federal prosecutors and an investigation was assigned to the Charleroi Federal Judicial Police.<\/p>\n<p>\tArticle continues below the player<\/p>\n<p>After carrying out a number of investigative steps, police launched an operation on Thursday and searched the woman\u2019s home and her workplace inside SHAPE.
