The Federal Prosecutor’s Office initiated an investigation after NATO’s security services alerted Belgian military intelligence.

The woman, identified as a Canadian citizen of Chinese origin, is suspected of spying for a third country and being part of a criminal organisation. NATO’s strategic headquarters, known as SHAPE, is located in Mons, Belgium, where military officials plan joint operations. The political headquarters is in Brussels, where member nations discuss defence issues, including cyber threats.

“At this time, there is no indication that NATO or SHAPE operational readiness, command and control arrangements, or ongoing tasks have been adversely affected. SHAPE continues to fulfil its responsibilities without interruption,” said Col. Martin L. O’Donnell, a spokesperson for SHAPE.

Both Canada and Belgium are part of a 32-country military alliance that, in 2021, identified China as a “security challenge,” along with threats from Russia and the Middle East. NATO leaders have warned that China is undermining the global order, developing its military in secret, and spreading disinformation. They believe China’s actions present systemic challenges to international rules and alliance security.

The Chinese government has labelled these concerns as unfounded, claiming its military buildup is defensive. This situation comes at a critical time for NATO, facing criticism from President Donald Trump, who has reduced US security commitments in Europe. Trump has urged allies to spend more on defence and get involved in conflicts, even threatening to seize Greenland from Denmark, which has unsettled the alliance.

In response to Trump’s pressure, NATO members agreed last year to allocate 5% of their GDP to defence, with 3.5% for military items and 1.5% for infrastructure and cybersecurity.

This article used information from The Associated Press.

A Canadian woman was arrested for espionage while interning at NATO’s operational headquarters in Belgium.
