A Canadian facing espionage charges in Belgium<\/a> will remain in custody for the time being.<\/p>\n

Following a closed-door hearing Tuesday, the Belgian federal prosecutor\u2019s office said the suspect would continue to be held in pretrial detention.<\/p>\n

The prosecutor\u2019s office announced Saturday<\/a> that \u201ca Canadian national of Chinese origin\u201d had been arrested on charges of espionage and participation in a criminal organization.<\/p>\n

The suspect, who has not been publicly named, worked as an intern at NATO\u2019s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe in Mons, Belgium.<\/p>\n

The prosecutor\u2019s office said she came to the attention of SHAPE\u2019s security services, who reported the matter to Belgium\u2019s military intelligence agency.<\/p>\n

In cases where pretrial detention is maintained, a suspect generally appears before the court once a month during the first three months, the office said.<\/p>\n
