The Belgian state is also being held responsible as a shareholder in the SNCB.<\/p>\n<p>The NGF is aiming for both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thejc.com\/news\/world\/belgium-holocaust-compensation-deportations-bsapfq9v\" data-tracking-context=\"In article link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">financial compensation<\/a> and an acknowledgement of the Belgian state\u2019s alleged complicity and collaboration.<\/p>\n<p>There have reportedly been talks held between the NGF, the SNCB, and the Belgian government, so far to no avail.<\/p>\n<p>Once both the government and the SNCB head into negotiations open to the idea of compensation, the legal process will be paused, the foundation added.<\/p>\n<p>The government has previously acknowledged its role in perpetrating the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thejc.com\/news\/world\/swastika-sprayed-on-housing-for-holocaust-survivors-in-belgium-vb8avbat\" data-tracking-context=\"In article link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Holocaust within Belgium<\/a>. Then-Prime Minister\u00a0Guy Verhofstadt formally apologised for and acknowledged the role that the Belgian state played in carrying out the Final Solution\u00a0in 2007.<\/p>\n<p>Verhofstadt\u2019s apology came on the day of the findings of the Submissive Belgium report, a government-commissioned study that\u00a0confirmed the active collaboration of Belgian authorities and local elites\u00a0with the Nazis, were released.<\/p>\n<p>Before the Second World War, 50,000 Jews resided in Belgium.
