{"id":3181,"date":"2026-02-23T22:45:09","date_gmt":"2026-02-23T22:45:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/be\/3181\/"},"modified":"2026-02-23T22:45:09","modified_gmt":"2026-02-23T22:45:09","slug":"belgiums-colruyt-group-rolls-out-yellow-pea-falafel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/be\/3181\/","title":{"rendered":"Belgium&#8217;s Colruyt Group Rolls Out Yellow Pea Falafel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Belgian retailer Colruyt Group has replaced the traditional chickpea base in a new falafel product with yellow peas, positioning it as a more sustainable alternative.<\/p>\n<p>The product expands the retailer\u2019s private-label <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esmmagazine.com\/tag\/boni-plant\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Boni Plan\u2019t<\/a> range and caters to the growing demand for plant-based options.<\/p>\n<p>Ilka Lanau, manager of the private-label category at Colruyt Group, said, \u201cBy offering a broader and more varied range of plant-based proteins, we support our customers in making balanced everyday food choices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Belgian Yellow Peas<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esmmagazine.com\/tag\/colruyt\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Colruyt<\/a> said sustainable cultivation was a key driver behind the launch.<\/p>\n<p>By replacing chickpeas, typically sourced in Eastern Mediterranean regions, with locally cultivated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esmmagazine.com\/tag\/yellow-peas\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">yellow peas<\/a>, the retailer aims to support local <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esmmagazine.com\/tag\/agriculture\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">agriculture<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The company noted that yellow peas fit well into European crop rotation systems and are suitable for cultivation in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esmmagazine.com\/tag\/belgium\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Belgium\u2019s<\/a> climate.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the crop contributes to soil health by fixing nitrogen and requiring relatively limited crop protection measures.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica Amendolara, head of farming at Colruyt Group, said, \u201cThanks to the valuable insights gained from our small-scale yellow pea trial last year, we are convinced of both the feasibility and the added value of this protein-rich crop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is why we are continuing to invest decisively in the production and support of locally produced protein crops.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Focus On Health<\/p>\n<p>Priced at \u20ac3.49, the falafel targets growing consumer demand for plant-based and nutritious products.<\/p>\n<p>The yellow pea falafels, which also contain feta and courgette, provide 25% <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esmmagazine.com\/tag\/protein\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">protein<\/a> and are described by the retailer as high in fibre and low in fat.<\/p>\n<p>Lanau, said, \u201cConsumers are increasingly looking for local, healthy products based on pulses.
