KABUL (Pajhwok): Construction workers have discovered a cache of gold worth an estimated \u20ac9 million ($10.4 million) while excavating land for a sewage network in Dendermonde, Belgium, People magazine reports.<\/p>\n
The hoard, found at a construction site in Dendermonde, included 49 gold bars and a large number of gold coins.<\/p>\n
Police were called to the site following the discovery. Authorities collected and documented the gold before transferring it to a secure federal government facility.<\/p>\n
Kobe, 18, one of the workers, said he initially believed the coins were ordinary \u20ac1 coins. However, after noticing a piece of gold, he realised the workers had made a significant discovery.<\/p>\n
Mario, the project manager, said he had never encountered anything similar during his 33 years in the construction industry.<\/p>\n
The East Flanders Public Prosecutor\u2019s Office has launched an investigation to determine the origin and legal ownership of the gold.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt this moment, it is not known where that gold comes from, nor to whom it legally belongs,\u201d prosecutor Hanne Ollevier told People magazine.<\/p>\n
The building where the treasure was discovered is owned by CAW Oost-Vlaanderen, a Belgian charity that supports people facing difficult circumstances.<\/p>\n
Police have warned members of the public against entering the construction site in search of additional treasure. The site has been closed off and contains dangerous pits, while authorities said all the discovered gold has already been removed.<\/p>\n
