spread overnight, more help on way"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Air reinforcements were headed to Belgium Monday to help combat the country\u2019s worst wildfire in a century, which made \u201climited\u201d advance overnight after threatening to spill into neighbouring Germany.<\/p>\n<p>Much-needed rain was delivering some respite to firefighters on their fourth day battling the blaze, which broke out Friday for reasons still unknown in the High Fens nature reserve, a vast expanse of boggy peatlands, pine forests and hiking trails.<\/p>\n<p>Europe has been swept by weeks of devastating wildfires fuelled by dry conditions and a historically hot summer that has already contributed to the deaths of thousands of people.<\/p>\n<p>ALSO READ | <a href=\"https:\/\/witness.co.za\/news\/2026\/08\/06\/quick-action-contains-durban-informal-settlement-blaze\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Quick action contains Durban informal settlement blaze<\/a><\/p>\n<p>France, Greece, Portugal and Spain were also battling major fires over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>In Belgium, where as of Sunday the fire had spread to 3,000 hectares (7,500 acres) \u2014 an area half the size of Manhattan \u2014 around 500 firefighters and emergency crews have mobilised to contain it.<\/p>\n<p>A Monday morning update from the local governor\u2019s office said \u201cthe fire\u2019s spread remained limited thanks to more favourable winds and rainfall recorded late overnight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMajor aerial resources are due to reinforce crews on the ground throughout the day,\u201d it said, with helicopters from Norway and Germany joining the fleet of aircraft hauling water to hard-to-reach areas.<\/p>\n<p>Crisis management spokesman Tony Hosmans confirmed to reporters Monday the blaze was no longer advancing towards the German border \u2014 after creeping nearer over the weekend, prompting an evacuation order in the border town of Monschau.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt present, the fire is contained wherever intervention is possible,\u201d Hosmans said \u2014 although he cautioned it had not yet been brought under control, with an aerial reconnaissance mission due to deliver a fuller picture later in the day.<\/p>\n<p>And the rainfall \u2014 with more forecast on and off throughout the week \u2014 was a welcome development.<\/p>\n<p>The blaze broke out in an area that was ravaged by massive fires in 1911, during a similar period of heatwaves and drought.<\/p>\n<p>ALSO READ | <a href=\"https:\/\/witness.co.za\/news\/2026\/08\/04\/firefighters-hope-to-contain-blaze-on-athens-outskirts\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Firefighters hope to contain blaze on Athens outskirts<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It is the country\u2019s largest wildfire since.<\/p>\n<p>A huge area at the border has been blanketed by a thick plume of yellowish smoke, with fumes detected as far as eastern France, where authorities issued an air-pollution alert.<\/p>\n<p>The smoke hazard has triggered the evacuation of two Belgian villages, whose residents were still under instruction to stay away.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 \u2018Happening to us\u2019 \u2013<\/p>\n<p>On-site operations have been made much harder by the fens\u2019 terrain \u2014 a patchwork of heath, peat bogs and raised wooden boardwalks where heavy vehicles risk sinking into the ground \u2014 and firefighters struggle to tackle the fire at close range.<\/p>\n<p>They have been counting heavily on aerial assistance to bring the situation under control.<\/p>\n<p>The new deployment Monday involves two helicopters from Germany and two from Norway \u2014 joining water-bombing aircraft and helicopters from Sweden, the Netherlands and Belgium already on site.<\/p>\n<p>Local farmers have also poured in to help battle the blaze, with a ballet of tractors pulling in tankers of water drawn from a nearby lake.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve provided drinks and some meals,\u201d Annick Dodemont, who runs one of many local businesses supporting the firefighting operation, told AFP.<\/p>\n<p>ALSO READ | <a href=\"https:\/\/witness.co.za\/news\/2026\/07\/30\/firefighters-battle-to-contain-deadly-crete-blaze-in-greece\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Firefighters battle to contain deadly Crete blaze in Greece<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t go up there ourselves, so we help however we can,\u201d said the 41-year-old.<\/p>\n<p>Like much of Europe, Belgium has experienced a new spell of intense heat and drought in recent days.<\/p>\n<p>Temperatures reached as high as 37C in some parts of the country on Friday, creating conditions conducive to wildfire outbreaks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s pretty shocking,\u201d Dodemont said from her restaurant in Eupen. \u201cYou always think it happens somewhere else. Well, not anymore.
