{"id":34302,"date":"2026-08-25T11:51:10","date_gmt":"2026-08-25T11:51:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/be\/34302\/"},"modified":"2026-08-25T11:51:10","modified_gmt":"2026-08-25T11:51:10","slug":"oscars-belgium-selects-lukas-dhonts-coward","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/be\/34302\/","title":{"rendered":"Oscars: Belgium Selects Lukas Dhont\u2019s \u2018Coward\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/lukas-dhont\/\" id=\"auto-tag_lukas-dhont\" data-tag=\"lukas-dhont\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lukas Dhont<\/a>\u2019s latest feature, <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/coward\/\" id=\"auto-tag_coward\" data-tag=\"coward\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Coward<\/a>, has been selected as <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/belgium\/\" id=\"auto-tag_belgium\" data-tag=\"belgium\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Belgium<\/a>\u2019s entry for the <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/best-international-feature-film\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Best International Feature Film<\/a> category at the 99th Academy Awards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tDirected by Dhont from a screenplay he wrote with Angelo Tijssens, Coward is set at the height of the First World War and follows Pierre, a soldier newly arrived at the front, who is eager to prove himself. Behind the lines, he meets Francis, who decides to lift the spirits of his comrades by putting together a theatre show. While the violence continues, both men try to find ways to escape the brutality of war, even if only for a moment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tCoward is a Reunion, Lumen, Topkapi Films &amp; Versus (Opus) production in co-production with France 2 Cin\u00e9ma, VTM, RTBF, Proximus, BeTV &amp; Orange. The film was produced in association with The Common Humanity Art Trust and Portobello Productions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe film will be distributed in Benelux by Lumi\u00e8re and in France by Diaphana Distribution. <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/mubi\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mubi<\/a> has acquired Coward in the UK, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain, Turkey, Latin America, Australia, and New Zealand. Mubi also released Dhont\u2019s Close, which was nominated for the Best International Feature Film Oscar. The Match Factory handles international sales.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tIn his review out of Cannes, Deadline\u2019s Peter Hammond described the film as a \u201cheartbreaking screen love story.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cLukas Dhont in his brief filmography has proven to be a filmmaker whose eye is on people and what makes us who we are,\u201d Hammond wrote. \u201cThat is a rare talent, much needed in these daunting times.
