The new ships are expected to strengthen the Bulgarian Navy’s mine countermeasure capabilities and help maintain the safety of navigation in the Black Sea.

Bulgaria will receive three vessels under a separate agreement with the Netherlands. They are equipped to detect and neutralize mines, as well as other hazardous objects at sea. Another four vessels will be transferred under an agreement concluded by Bulgaria, Belgium, and the Netherlands.

Preparing the Ships for Service in the Black Sea

Before ownership is transferred, the Netherlands must restore the technical capabilities and improve the operational readiness of the three vessels. Bulgaria will fund the repair and refurbishment of all seven ships to bring them in line with NATO operational readiness standards.

These mine countermeasure vessels are especially necessary. We have three ships of this type, and with these seven, we will supplement and further expand our capabilities.

– Bulgarian Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov

Dimitar Stoyanov also drew attention to Bulgaria’s participation in a joint mine countermeasures group with Turkey and Romania. It coordinates the clearance of mines in the maritime areas of the three countries.

Expanding Mine Countermeasures Cooperation

In July, Bulgaria, Romania, and Turkey agreed during the NATO summit to expand their joint Black Sea mine-clearing task force. In addition to detecting and eliminating mine threats, the group’s tasks now include protecting critical infrastructure.

The memorandum of understanding on the acquisition of the vessels covers more than just their transfer. It also provides for crew training and the supply of spare parts and additional equipment. This is intended to enable Bulgaria to fully commission all seven vessels for security and mine-clearance missions in the Black Sea.

A major naval upgrade is taking shape as Bulgaria prepares to expand its role in protecting shipping and…

[4
7,18684,144
post-34744","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-belgium","tag-belgium","tag-bulgaria-minehunting-ships-black-sea-security-naval-mine-countermeasures-bulgarian-navy-nato-maritime-security","tag-news
["GET
