{"id":36764,"date":"2026-09-07T18:00:14","date_gmt":"2026-09-07T18:00:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/be\/36764\/"},"modified":"2026-09-07T18:00:14","modified_gmt":"2026-09-07T18:00:14","slug":"julie-allemand-breaks-world-cup-assist-record-in-belgiums-80-68-win-over-australia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/be\/36764\/","title":{"rendered":"Julie Allemand breaks World Cup assist record in Belgium\u2019s 80-68 win over Australia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BERLIN (AP) \u2014 Julie Allemand stands alone atop the assist list in World Cup history.<\/p>\n<p>Allemand broke Laia Palau of Spain\u2019s mark of 108 assists in the first half of Belgium\u2019s <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/womens-basketball-world-cup-fiba-193274eff5c189ba75165cab995a8eac\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">80-68<\/a> win over Australia that clinched a spot in the quarterfinals. She now has 111 in her World Cup career.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m just so proud because for Belgium, this is how we play,\u201d Allemand said. \u201cWe are so unselfish. I\u2019m just happy to have that one as a special one, especially when you look at the names next to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Besides Palau, Allemand has passed Dawn Staley and Sue Bird\u2019s numbers in this tournament.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a huge accomplishment over here,\u201d Belgium coach Mike Thibault said looking at Allemand in the postgame press conference. \u201cThe leading assist person in World Cup history after today. Some pretty good players on that list too, so I think that\u2019s pretty exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Belgian guard started the tournament with 87 assists, and already has 24 in the first three games. She broke Palau\u2019s record when Emma Meesseman hit two free throws with 1:58 left in the first half. FIBA gives an assist out when a player is fouled and makes the free throws unlike in the WNBA. <\/p>\n<p>Allemand plays for Australia coach Sandy Brondello with the Toronto Tempo in the WNBA.
