{"id":3792,"date":"2026-02-27T10:44:09","date_gmt":"2026-02-27T10:44:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/be\/3792\/"},"modified":"2026-02-27T10:44:09","modified_gmt":"2026-02-27T10:44:09","slug":"brussels-implements-eu-mercosur-trade-deal-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/be\/3792\/","title":{"rendered":"Brussels implements EU-Mercosur trade deal \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BRUSSELS \u2014 The EU will provisionally implement its trade deal with the South American Mercosur bloc, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced Friday, in a move that is likely to trigger a major backlash from European capitals and lawmakers opposed to the deal.<\/p>\n<p>The deal, to create a free-trade area spanning 720 million people, is controversial because it hasn\u2019t yet been officially blessed by the European Parliament. Lawmakers voted last month to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/eu-mercosur-trade-deal-stalled-as-meps-send-it-for-judicial-review\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">send it for review<\/a> by the Court of Justice of the European Union, effectively freezing its final  ratification for up to two years.<\/p>\n<p>Implementation could harden opposition in the European Parliament, antagonize skeptical countries led by France and Poland, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/some-eu-mercosur-biggest-fans-nervous-about-moving-fast\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">potentially sink the agreement<\/a> when it comes to a final consent vote later.<\/p>\n<p>The European Commission <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/eu-countries-approve-mercosur-trade-deal-for-signature\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">received the go-head<\/a> from EU countries in January to implement the deal once Mercosur countries complete their own approvals.
