{"id":4419,"date":"2026-03-02T19:06:22","date_gmt":"2026-03-02T19:06:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/be\/4419\/"},"modified":"2026-03-02T19:06:22","modified_gmt":"2026-03-02T19:06:22","slug":"british-factories-warned-of-chaos-under-brussels-made-in-europe-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/be\/4419\/","title":{"rendered":"British factories warned of chaos under Brussels\u2019 \u2018made in Europe\u2019 plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>    <img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/c1ea9a4c5948146afdbac2bd15175099.jpeg\" alt=\"Sir Keir Starmer\" loading=\"eager\" height=\"599\" width=\"960\" class=\"yf-lglytj  loaded\"\/> Sir Keir Starmer is attempting to secure an EU reset &#8211; Kirsty Wigglesworth\/AFP via Getty Images      <\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">British factories risk being cut out of EU supply chains under Brussels\u2019 <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2026\/02\/06\/europe-threat-shun-british-goods-starmer-embraces-brussels\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:\u201cmade in Europe\u201d plan;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">\u201cmade in Europe\u201d plan<\/a>, the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) has warned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">The European Union is pushing for new quotas on the use of domestic components in products such as cars, which would end the bloc\u2019s traditional reliance on China and the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">However, the new legislation risks damaging British business caught up in the \u201cchaos\u201d, the BCC warned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">William Bain, the head of trade policy at the BCC, said the most extreme version of the bloc\u2019s \u201cmade in Europe\u201d policy could trigger \u201ca chilling effect on cross-border trade and cause chaos for EU-based producers reliant on UK parts and components\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">The lobby group called on the Government to urgently negotiate an exemption for British companies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">Peter Kyle, the Business Secretary, urged officials in Brussels to classify British companies as European under the new rules.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">Mr Bain emphasised that the stakes were very high.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">He said: \u201cThe UK Government is very much alive to this danger and dialogue is ongoing but this issue is not yet on the radar of enough firms and its seriousness cannot be underestimated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">Measures being considered by Brussels include content rules that will require up to 70pc of the components in the goods firms make to be of EU origin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">The bloc is also weighing up new rules on sustainability, capping foreign direct investment and red tape governing procurement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">The UK\u2019s position as a third country leaves British companies at risk of being squeezed out of supply chains, with <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2026\/01\/29\/eu-accused-of-shutting-out-britains-carmakers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:car manufacturing;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">car manufacturing<\/a> particularly exposed. Brussels has already begun to set out legislation to increase subsidies for EU-made vehicles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">Patrick Keating, the head of government affairs at Honda Motor Europe, said the car manufacturer was \u201cconcerned about the strong emphasis on \u2018made in the EU\u2019 requirements in the Industrial Accelerator Act\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">He added that the bloc\u2019s proposed legislation risked \u201climiting global supply chain resilience and reducing consumer choice during the transition to sustainable mobility\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">Brussels\u2019s \u201cmade in Europe\u201d agenda also threatens to derail <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/world-news\/2026\/02\/24\/starmers-brexit-reset-must-go-even-further-says-european-pa\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Sir Keir Starmer\u2019s attempts to secure an EU reset;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Sir Keir Starmer\u2019s attempts to secure an EU reset<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">In May 2025, the Prime Minister announced his plans to bring the UK closer to the EU.
