Industrial action is due to begin on the evening of Sunday 8 March. It is expected to spread across domestic and cross-border services before culminating in Thursday’s general strike. During previous Belgian strikes, some trains were turned at Lille or Calais, leaving through-ticket holders stranded before reaching their final destination. Also, corporate travel desks are being advised to move time-critical meetings online or consider air services to Luxembourg or Paris, although those routes could also be affected by the airport stoppage.

Don’t miss…CSX short line awards recognize nine rail partners

The updated FCDO travel advisory also notes that previous Belgian strikes were announced with little notice. That means travellers need to monitor operator apps and social media feeds right up to departure. Meanwhile, insurance providers say many standard policies do not cover strike-related delays unless a “travel disruption” rider has been added.

UK travel alert for Belgium and document checks

Passengers who change dates or reroute through a neighbouring country may also run into visa and passport validity issues. At the same time, the text notes that VisaHQ’s Belgium portal offers fast online checks and application support for Schengen and other travel documents, giving both corporate travel managers and individual passengers an extra safety net when travel plans are disrupted. This is especially relevant for commuters living outside Brussels who rely on SNCB trains.

Separately, the combination of air and rail stoppages underlines the wider pressure that nationwide labour action can place on Belgium’s connectivity. For companies operating regional headquarters or EU liaison offices in Brussels, that remains an important planning risk.

News on railway transport, industry, and railway technologies from Railway Supply that you might have missed:

Find the latest news of the railway industry in Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union and the rest of the world on our page on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, read Railway Supply magazine online.
Place your ads on webportal and in Railway Supply magazine.
