They had all graduated from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/tag\/antwerp\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Antwerp\u2019<\/a>s Royal Academy of Fine Arts between 1980 and 1981, and were convinced that London was where they needed to go to get noticed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/vivienne-westwood\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vivienne Westwood<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/tag\/katharine-hamnett\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Katherine Hamnett<\/a>, BodyMap, Culture Shock and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/john-galliano\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">John Galliano,<\/a>\u201d Geert Bruloot, the owner of cult shoe shop Coccodrillo, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/article\/26241\/1\/how-the-antwerp-six-took-on-the-world\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told Dazed in 2015.<\/a> \u201cWe all united, rented a truck and went to London to show the collections, and that\u2019s where it started.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As well as Bruloot, other passengers inside the truck included <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/tag\/dries-van-noten\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dries Van Noten<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/ann-demeulemeester\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ann Demeulemeester,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/walter-van-beirendonck\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Walter Van Beirendonck<\/a>, Dirk Van Saene, Dirk Bikkembergs and Marina Yee. Once they arrived at the British designer show space, the group displayed their work on the top floor \u2013 typically where the bridal collections were found and where few bothered to venture. The Belgian designers found a solution by putting up posters around the space, and soon, buyers from Barney\u2019s had put in an order. It wasn\u2019t long after that until the British press had swarmed the mysterious group, yet didn\u2019t know how to properly pronounce their names, thus dubbing them The Antwerp Six.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Next year, marking the 40th anniversary since they first rented that van, Antwerp\u2019s MoMu fashion museum is set to host a new major exhibition celebrating the Antwerp Six, guest curated by Bruloot.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Antwerp Six helped shape recent fashion history,\u201d says MoMu director Kaat Debo. \u201cWe are immensely proud that we can bring the work of these six iconic designers together for a unique, in-depth view of their legacy and their influence.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It also marks the first time that a major exhibition is devoted to the six designers, exploring each of their trajectories, from leaving the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, to changing the course of fashion history.
