Commenting on the report of the UN Human Rights Council’s Special Rapporteur Irene Khan and addressing the issue of exercising the right to freedom of opinion in the digital age, the Belarusian diplomat drew attention to the absence in the report of an assessment of inequality: a problem exacerbated by the reluctance of developed states to share technologies.

It is precisely this inequality that has enabled the emergence of a small group of influential oligarchs, platforms, companies, and governments contributing to the crisis of freedom of speech. “This group seeks to impose its own conditions, confidently and actively promoting pro‑Western narratives and agendas in human rights matters,” Larisa Belskaya emphasized. “The arbitrary removal from YouTube of the channels of major Belarusian media outlets, BelTA news agency, ONT and STV, fits into this logic of striving for dominance.”

The Belarusian representative drew the Special Rapporteur’s attention to this blatant violation of the right to freely seek, receive, and disseminate information that has affected millions of people. “We expect a response, assessments, and recommendations regarding practical measures to prevent such incidents and to restore the rights that have been violated,” Larisa Belskaya stated.

In addition, Larisa Belskaya spoke during the interactive dialogue on the report of the Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary, or arbitrary executions.

The Belarusian diplomat noted that amid the armed conflict raging near Belarus, there has been a growing number of deliberate strikes by the Armed Forces of Ukraine against the civilian population. “We see in the strikes that result in the intentional deprivation of life of civilians in Russia, including children, signs of actions falling under the definition of arbitrary executions,” Larisa Belskaya said. “In Russia’s Bryansk Oblast, as a result of an attack by a Ukrainian strike drone on a Belarusian civilian bus, a pregnant woman was killed and more than 40 people were injured, including 28 children, some of whom are in serious condition. Evidence indicates the attack was deliberate. We are outraged by this gross violation of international humanitarian law. We believe that this cynical, deliberate attack on peaceful civilians must become the subject of an immediate and objective investigation and receive an appropriate assessment, including from international human rights bodies.”

“Such terrorist methods must not be silenced,” she added.

Belskaya at UN raises concern over free-speech crisis after Youtube removes Belarus’ media channels MINSK, 18 June (BelTA)…

[3
32,642,644,145,643
post-1640","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-news","tag-belarus","tag-international-cooperation","tag-interview","tag-republic-of-belarus","tag-speeches
["GET
