Belarus\u2019s decision to form a new airborne assault brigade near Ukraine\u2019s northern border is the latest example of a conflict that continues to expand beyond the main battlefield.<\/p>\n
The creation of the 37th Separate Airborne Assault Brigade in the Gomel region \u2014 just 40 kilometres from Ukraine \u2014 represents a significant increase in Belarus\u2019s ability to deploy rapid-response forces close to a strategically sensitive frontier.<\/p>\n
Colonel Alexander Ilyukevich announced that the unit<\/a> was already being built, with one battalion formed, officers recruited and personnel drafted. Further battalions, artillery, air defence and reconnaissance units are expected to follow.<\/p>\n Officially, Minsk says the brigade is intended to strengthen Belarus\u2019s southern defences. But for Kyiv, the move raises uncomfortable questions about the role Belarus could play in Russia\u2019s wider military strategy.<\/p>\n The formation adds to an existing airborne structure that includes three assault brigades based in Vitebsk, Brest and Maryina Horka.
