Sometimes they begin with construction crews, new barracks, fresh recruits and a quiet reshaping of military power.

Belarus’s decision to form a new airborne assault brigade near Ukraine’s northern border is the latest example of a conflict that continues to expand beyond the main battlefield.

The creation of the 37th Separate Airborne Assault Brigade in the Gomel region — just 40 kilometres from Ukraine — represents a significant increase in Belarus’s ability to deploy rapid-response forces close to a strategically sensitive frontier.

Colonel Alexander Ilyukevich announced that the unit was already being built, with one battalion formed, officers recruited and personnel drafted. Further battalions, artillery, air defence and reconnaissance units are expected to follow.

Officially, Minsk says the brigade is intended to strengthen Belarus’s southern defences. But for Kyiv, the move raises uncomfortable questions about the role Belarus could play in Russia’s wider military strategy.

The formation adds to an existing airborne structure that includes three assault brigades based in Vitebsk, Brest and Maryina Horka. It also follows a period of increased military activity near the Ukrainian border, including the development of training areas and logistical facilities.

🚨 Massive Chinese military drills with forces deployed in Belarus – Beijing explicitly declares it will not stand idle if NATO attacks Russia.
