(Photo: Natalia Kolesnikova\/AFP via Getty Images)\n        <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Self-proclaimed Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko<br \/>\nchose to congratulate Ukrainians on the 35th anniversary of independence. The<br \/>\ndictator said that \u201cthe historical destinies of the Belarusian and Ukrainian<br \/>\npeoples are closely intertwined,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/president.gov.by\/ru\/events\/pozdravlenie-narodu-ukrainy-1787324755\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_new\">Belarusian president\u2019s website<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cOur nations are connected by centuries-old traditions,<br \/>\nmemories of shared victories and difficult trials,\u201d Lukashenko claimed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He also expressed confidence that despite \u201cgeopolitical<br \/>\nupheavals,\u201d future generations of Belarusians and Ukrainians would \u201cpreserve<br \/>\ntheir age-old friendly and family ties,\u201d while the two capitals would restore<br \/>\n\u201cmutually beneficial cooperation based on trust, respect and equality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cHospitable Belarus is always open to every Ukrainian who<br \/>\ncomes with good intentions,\u201d Lukashenko said, wishing Ukrainian citizens<br \/>\n\u201chealth and prosperity, and their country \u2014 peace and happiness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">On July 28, the Forum of Democratic Forces of Belarus<br \/>\nreleased a letter saying that the Office of the President of Ukraine had asked<br \/>\nthe Prosecutor General\u2019s Office to consider opening criminal proceedings<br \/>\nagainst Lukashenko. In May, the Belarusian opposition called on Kyiv to hold<br \/>\nLukashenko accountable for war crimes, genocide and state terror.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Belarusian opposition accuses the Belarusian dictator of<br \/>\ncomplicity in Russia\u2019s war against Ukraine and of forcibly transferring at<br \/>\nleast 2,442 Ukrainian children to Belarus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Lukashenko has repeatedly congratulated Ukraine on<br \/>\nIndependence Day since Russia launched its full-scale invasion. In 2024, the<br \/>\ndictator said he had always regarded Ukraine \u201cwith special respect and warmth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">That same year, Iran\u2019s Foreign Ministry also congratulated<br \/>\nUkraine on Independence Day. Iran also supports Russian aggression. The<br \/>\nministry <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/IRIMFA_EN\/status\/1827259327490805776\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">posted<\/a> a brief congratulatory message on X featuring the<br \/>\nflags of both countries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Ukraine marks the 35th anniversary of its independence on<br \/>\nAug. 24. For more than 12 years \u2014 one-third of that period \u2014 the country has<br \/>\nbeen at war with Russia.
