Critical Mineral Resources PLC (LSE:CMRS, FRA:98J) CEO Charlie Long talked with Proactive’s Stephen Gunnion about the appointment of Brett Capper as chair of the company’s Technical Committee and how his experience will support feasibility and development work at the Agadir Melloul project.
Long highlighted Capper’s extensive mining industry experience, including senior roles at Rio Tinto and involvement with the feasibility study for the Simandou project in Guinea. He said this combination of operational, technical and project development experience would be valuable as Critical Mineral Resources determines how best to advance Agadir Melloul.
“For us to have him is a bit of a coup, very much a coup,” Long said, adding that Capper could help the company ensure it does “the right things” while avoiding unnecessary spending and over-engineering.
A key focus is capital discipline. Long explained that this applies not only to the eventual mine build but also to the scope of work assigned to external technical consultants during feasibility studies. With the company planning to begin with a shallow open-pit operation, CMR wants to focus expenditure on work required for the initial development rather than undertaking detailed studies for potential future stages prematurely.
The company is also assessing a range of development options, including whether initial throughput should be 500, 650, 750 or 1,000 tonnes per day. Other decisions include whether CMR should own its mining fleet and whether renewable energy and electric haul trucks could form part of the development.
Long said these choices need to be considered during the planning process so the company has a clear development strategy before construction begins.
