Power supply from the Visayas and Mindanao grids were limited on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2026, prompting the issuance of red and yellow alerts, according to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).
The NGCP said the Visayas grid will be on the following status on Wednesday:
Red Alert
3:00PM- 4:00PM 5:00PM- 9:00PM
Yellow Alert
1:00PM- 3:00PM 4:00PM- 5:00PM 9:00PM- 10:00PM
This is due to the available capacity of Visayas grid at 2,205 MW while peak demand is estimated to be 2,501 MW.
“4 plants are on forced outage on September, 6 plants are on forced outage since August 2026, 1 plant since July, 2 plants since June, 7 plants since May, 3 plants since 2025, 2 plants since 2024, 2 plants since 2023, and 1 plant since 2021, while 16 plants are running on derated capacities, for a total of 774MW unavailable to the grid,” the NGCP said.
The company also said the large coal plants TVI 1 and PEDC 3 in Visayas were unavailable, and the power import from Mindanao is limited, and both factors contributed to the declaration of red and yellow alerts.
NGCP said it issues a red alert “when power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid’s regulating requirement.”
A yellow alert on the other hand is raised ” when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.”
Mindanao grid
Meanwhile, yellow alerts will be issued for the Mindanao grid on Wednesday afternoon as follows:
1:00PM- 4:00PM 5:00PM- 8:00PM
The grid’s available capacity is 2,630 MW but peak demand is estimated to reach 2,487 MW, NGCP said.
A total of 777.6 MW is unavailable to the Mindanao grid due to plants on forced outage or running on derated capacities.
Mindanao’s large coal plants GNPK 1 & 2 and TSI 2 were also unavailable, contributing to the declaration of the yellow alert, NGCP added. —KG, GMA News
