Drivers are warned of long delays on the motorway, as a closure is in place in both directions between junctions 22 and 23, near Burnham-on-Sea.National Highways has warned drivers that an “emergency closure” is in place on the motorway as National Grid carries out “safety-critical infrastructure” above the carriageway. It added: “The closure is required to allow the works to be carried out safely.”Drivers travelling southbound are told to follow the solid diamond diversion symbol. The diversion follows: Exit the M5 at J22 then take the A38 (Bristol Road), continue on the A38 southbound towards Dunball, at Dunball Roundabout, take the 1st exit on to the A39, and then re-join the M5 J23 southbound at Dunball Interchange.Drivers travelling northbound are told to follow the solid circle diversion symbol. The diversion follows: Exit the M5 at J23 (Dunball Interchange) and take the 1st exit on to the A39, at Dunball Roundabout, take the 3rd exit on to the A38, continue on the A38 northbound towards Edithmead, and at the Edithmead Roundabout, take the 3rd exit and rejoin the M5 northbound at J22.Roads and traffic monitoring site, Inrix, also reports: “M5 in both directions closed, long delays due to emergency repairs from J23 A39 (Bridgwater North) to J22 ( Burnham-on-sea ). For low hanging cables.”Drivers also face delays because of heavy holiday traffic on the M5. Inrix said: “Queueing traffic due to holiday traffic on M5 Southbound at J20 B3133 Ettlingen Way ( Clevedon ).
