The story’s protagonist is the courageous teenager Katniss, who lives in District 12. When her younger sister Primrose is selected for the Games, Katniss volunteers as tribute. Her fellow tribute is the wily baker’s son Peeta Mellark, and Katniss also pines for her friend back home, Gale Hawthorne.

Katniss and Peeta are aided by past District 12 champion and heavy drinker Haymitch Abernathy, and their quirkily styled chaperone Effie Trinket. Their surprisingly strong performance in the Games arena (Katniss is a skilled archer and hunter), and their rebellion against the organisers, turns them into heroes – and deadly enemies of dictator President Snow.

Collins’s novels quickly became a phenomenon, and have since been adapted into blockbuster Hollywood movies, starring Jennifer Lawrence. Now we have the groundbreaking The Hunger Games: On Stage London production at the purpose-built Troubadour Canary Wharf Theatre.
