A resident living near the scene of a huge Huddersfield fire said he heard “at least 10 bangs” as he and others were evacuated from their homes.

The West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed firefighters responded to an “industrial fire” on Leeds Road in Huddersfield shortly after 12pm on Sunday, April 19. Huge plumes of smoke erupted into the sky from the site, with the road closed in both directions and residents evacuated by West Yorkshire Police.

Nathan Milner, who lives on Fieldhouse Road, said he heard at least 10 bangs as he was woken up by the fire at around 12.15pm. Speaking to Yorkshire Live, he said: “It was loud – boom, boom, boom. I heard at least 10 bangs.” He and others were evacuated from their homes at around 12.30pm by police officers. Officers shouted: “Get ready – you are going to have to get out”.

Matthew Milner was told to leave his home by police. He said “I was looking out of my mum’s window at the smoke. About 20 minutes later, the police came round and said we had to leave for our safety.”

Some residents have reported power cuts to nearby homes. Mum of five Helen is still waiting to get back into her property. She said: “I looked out of the window and saw the smoke and heard the bangs.”

A spokesperson for WYFRS said: “We are aware of a major fire on Leeds Road in the HD1 area of Huddersfield. We currently have 15 fire appliances and two aerial units in attendance. Please avoid the area if possible. Further updates to follow.”
