An investigation into the baby’s death in Reddish, Stockport, is underway

A woman has been arrested following the death of a baby girl in Stockport.

Emergency services were called to North Reddish just before 11am on Saturday (April 18) over reports of a ‘concern for welfare’. Eyewitnesses reported seeing a large police presence on Howden Close.

The baby, which the M.E.N. understands was a 14-week-old girl, was rushed to hospital from the scene and sadly died, a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police confirmed. A 35-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of child neglect.

She remains in custody, police said. A scene remains in place on the street and an investigation is underway.

A spokesperson for GMP said the probe is in its ‘early stages’ with officers ‘keeping an open mind’. In a statement, the force spokesperson said: “Emergency services were called to reports of a concern for welfare in North Reddish at 10:51am on Saturday 18 April.

“Despite the best efforts of emergency services, the baby sadly died at hospital. A 36 year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of child neglect and is in custody.

“A scene will remain in place whilst we conduct our investigation, which is still in its early stages. We are keeping an open mind and following all available lines of enquiry at this time.”
