A Good Morning Britain reporter has said that Scott Mills was ‘seemingly unaware’ of what was ahead as he signed off from his last show on Radio 2 last week before news of his sacking from the BBC emerged.

The Southampton-born DJ, who took over the BBC Radio 2 breakfast show from Zoe Ball last January, was abruptly taken off air last week. He last hosted his show on Tuesday (March 24) and after a joke with co-star Vernon Kay, signed off with: “See you tomorrow.”

After he failed to return, with Gary Davies stepping in on his show, the Mirror broke the news on Monday (March 30) that Mills had been let go from the BBC following an allegation relating to his personal conduct, and later reported that it understood the allegation against the presenter relates to a historic relationship dating back more than 10 years.

Hours later, the Mirror reported the corporation’s decision to sack Mills, who took over the Radio 2 breakfast show from Zoe Ball in January 2025, was related to a police investigation from 10 years ago into ‘serious sexual offences’ against a teen boy. The radio DJ was questioned by police under caution but the case was dropped three years later due to a lack of evidence, the Met Police has said.

The bombshell announcement from the BBC is said to has left those who know him ‘blindsided’ with the DJ having reportedly ‘completely shut down’. A BBC spokesperson said: “While we do not comment on matters relating to individuals, we can confirm Scott Mills is no longer contracted and has left the BBC.”

The news continues to dominate headlines, with the top story on Tuesday’s (March 31) edition of Good Morning Britain that of Mill’s BBC departure. Hosts Kate Garraway and Paul Brand were joined by ITV reporter Nick Dixon live from outside BBC Studios in London as they delivered the latest updates on the developing story.

“This has all happened very quickly, and as much as the BBC has appeared to act quite decisively here without giving any detail of what exactly has happened, it is yet another very high profile presenter leaving in really quite a challenging situation with many difficult headlines for the BBC this morning,” he told ITV viewers.

Nick Dixon reported on the news for Good Morning Britain viewers

“Scott Mills was a very popular presenter on the network over a long period of time, he had a career in television and in radio. He started on Radio 1, moved to 5 Live of course and ended up presenting the flagship Radio 2 breakfast show.

“He signed off on Tuesday of last week from his programme seemingly unaware that anything was about to take place.” Nick continued: “Scott Mills sacked from the BBC over allegations surrounding his personal conduct.

“The way in which the BBC has responded so quickly does suggest a real shift within the organisation. Reports this morning that the sacking of Scott Mills are being linked to a 2016 police investigation into serious sexual offences against a teenager. The Mirror have published a statement from the Metropolitan Police saying that the case was ultimately dropped due to lack of evidence. We haven’t been able to verify that statement from the Met Police.

“The BBC, however, will be focusing now on Scott Mills’ replacement for their flagship Radio 2 breakfast show. The frontrunner at the moment appears to be Vernon Kay.”
