Homes were evacuated as fire crews spent the night battling a huge blaze on a mountainside in the Rhondda. Emergency services were called to the scene of a large grass fire near to Rhondda Golf Club in Penrhys late on Wednesday evening.
Firefighters spent much of the night trying to bring the fire under control, with witnesses claiming it seemed like the “whole mountain” was alight. The fire is understood to have affected a three-mile-wide area close to homes in the area.
A total of 14 homes were evacuated by emergency services. Local residents were also advised to close their windows and doors due to smoke caused by the blaze.

The fire could be seen across the Rhondda, with the flames also moving down the mountain towards Llwynypia.

A spokesman for South Wales Fire and Rescue service confirmed that the fire had been brought under control on Thursday morning.
Residents have reported that a section of Penrhys Road remains closed. The emergency services have been asked for more information.
A previous statement from the fire service said: “Fire crews are currently attending a large grass fire near to Penrhys Golf Club, Penrhys, Ferndale. No further calls are required. Members of the public are advised to keep windows and doors closed.”
A South Wales Police spokesperson said: “Police and fire services are attending a fire near to Rhondda Golf Club.
“Local residents are advised to keep their windows closed. Further updates will be posted when they become available.”
