Residents were evacuated from a block of flats in Plymouth after a huge fire broke out.

Flames poured from the building, located just off North Hill, in the early hours of Thursday morning (April 30).

Six fire engines were sent to the building, where a fire had broken out on a roof terrace, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said.

Crews from Totnes, Plympton, Camels Head, Greenbank, Crownhill and Plymstock rushed out to tackle the blaze.

The decking area was completely destroyed by the blaze, the fire service said. Its cause was deemed accidental.

In a statement, the fire service said: “Three fire engines and an Aerial ladder platform, were all sent to a report of a fire in a block of flats in Plymouth.

“On arrival crews confirmed this was a large fire on a roof terrace and requested further assistance. A further 3 fire engines (6 in total) and a command support unit were sent to assist. Crews extinguished the fire using:

“This fire was believed to have been started on a communal decking area of the roof terrace, which was totally destroyed by the fire. The cause was accidental.”
