Murty has been on the college’s Board of Trustees since 2011 and served on the school’s Advisory Council for the Berger Institute for Individual and Social Development.
Claremont McKenna College is part of The Claremont Colleges, a system of seven private liberal arts universities based in the city.
During Sunak’s term as prime minister, Murty launched Lessons at 10, which allowed United Kingdom students to visit No. 10 Downing St., the prime minister’s historical home, to learn about its history and bring education to life with help from guests and experts, the release states.
The two also established The Richmond Project, a philanthropic organization in the United Kingdom that provides a gateway to understand mathematics.
The couple founded the Murty Sunak Quantitative and Computing Lab at the college, which opened in 2018 as a hub for data and computation. They also established an endowed philosophy professorship that allowed the program to double its capacity, the release said.
Murty and Sunak were guided by a shared “passion for education,” and a desire to build confidence around data and numbers to “support innovative solutions that drive social mobility,” the release states.
“Individually and as a team, Akshata and Rishi exemplify responsible leadership,” Claremont Mckenna President Hiram Chodosh said in the release. “From Rishi’s service to the United Kingdom as Prime Minister and a current Member of Parliament, to Akshata’s support of young entrepreneurs, education, arts and sciences, and varied philanthropic causes, they have both made a significant impact on business, government, and the professions.”
Murty earned a bachelor’s in economics and French from the college in 2002, and a master of business administration from Stanford University, where she met Sunak before they married in 2009. From 2013 to 2023, she ran Catamaran Ventures UK, an investment platform primarily serving the United Kingdom.
Before becoming prime minister, Sunak served as chancellor of the Exchequer, a member of the British cabinet in charge of economics and financial matters. He led the country’s economic response to COVID-19 from 2020 to 2022.
Before entering politics, Sunak worked in finance at Goldman Sachs, The Children’s Investment Fund and as co-founder of an investment firm supporting British businesses.
He was educated at Winchester College and Oxford University, and has an master’s in business administration from Stanford University, where he was a Fulbright scholar.
Claremont McKenna College’s 78th commencement will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 16, at Pritzlaff Field.
