More than 100 arcade machines, a giant laser tag arena, and enough karaoke rooms to sink a ship are just some of the features inside a brand-new ‘Mega City’ opening in the UK later this month.

The complex, conveniently called ‘Mega City,’ is just 40 minutes from Central London on the Elizabeth Line, tucked away in Slough, Berkshire.

It’s been touted as the ‘pinnacle’ of the town’s ‘regeneration,’ and, throwing open its doors on May 30, it’s hoping to bring more footfall to the centre.

The playground, which measures 55,000 square feet, has an impressive three floors and two mezzanine levels, packed out with crowd-pleasing entertainment factors designed not just for kids, but for adults, too.

And, forming an £11,000,000 investment, it doesn’t skimp on the fun.

Where will the new Mega City be?

Perfectly situated for a day trip from London, the new Mega City is an eight-minute walk from the Elizabeth Line station, at 233/249 High Street.

There’ll be late-night hours throughout the week, feeding into the vision that Mega City isn’t just a family-friendly destination, but one that’s also suitable for date nights, catch-ups with friends, and even work socials.

On Fridays and Saturdays, the entertainment complex will be open between 10am and 2.30am, while the rest of the week, it’ll operate between 10am and 1.30am. Thursday is the new Friday, right?

What features will Mega City have?

Already channelling your inner child at the mere thought? Mega City will have the following activities:

A giant arcade with 130 machines

10 bowling lanes

A laser tag arena accommodating up to 24 players

Laser raid and laser maze challenges

Battling cages

Clay pigeon shooting (augmented reality)

Darts (also augmented reality)

Karaoke and private party rooms

Pool tables

Flashpads

Total Football

A restaurant and bar area, serving up dishes including Detroit-style pizzas, loaded fries, and cocktails.

How does payment work at Mega City?

While no detail has been given on prices just yet, the payment system inside Slough’s Mega City is fully cashless, and it’s designed to allow gamers to flit between activities as quickly as possible.

To join in on the fun, you’ll need to purchase credit inside the venue using the kiosks, where you’ll be given a play card. It’s compatible with all the machines inside, and can be tapped against each one to authorise use.

The card will also automatically track any points you rack up against your competitors, so once you’ve finished your session, you can redeem your rightful prizes. Elsewhere, if you’ve booked online for group activities, like bowling or laser tag, you’ll be given a QR code. If you scan that at the relevant area once you enter, the session will be automatically activated.

‘An island of despair’

News of the impending Mega City is certainly welcome, considering that Slough’s locals have long been battling less-than-favourable opinions from others about their town. Even some locals don’t feel proud of it.

In December 2024, it was named the UK’s most miserable place to live by property website Rightmove, which asked people across the country how they felt about their area, including how proud they felt to live there, whether they felt a sense of belonging, and whether they earned enough.

Unfortunately, the good people of Slough weren’t too impressed with their humble abode, which has previously been nicknamed an ‘island of despair’ and ‘North Windsor’ in reference to its much brighter, happier sibling.

It’s true: Slough famously featured as David Brent’s hometown in The Office. But this claim to fame has done little to boost community spirit.

‘Avoid the centre if you value your sanity,’ @avidresolver previously advised in a Reddit thread.

Meanwhile, @lemnesiaa1995 lived there for just three months ‘before moving,’ while @GunstarGreen has ‘lived locally to Slough for 20 years.’

‘It’s a craphole…the shoppers were miserable as sin,’ they added, as another described it as the ‘armpit of Berkshire.’
