Police have launched an investigation after a woman died in an ‘unexplained death’ near a Walsall canal.

She was pulled from a canal off Wolverhampton Street in the town shortly after 1.15am this morning, May 3.

Detectives said her death was being treated as “unexplained”.

Specialist officers for West Midlands Police will be supporting her family.

A police cordon remained in place at the scene – which is near the town’s Premier Inn – this afternoon.

Detectives said they were in the “early stages” of their investigation.

A force spokesperson told BirminghamLive: “We’re carrying out enquiries after a woman sadly died after being pulled from the canal off Wolverhampton Stree t, Walsall, at just after 1.15am today.

“Her death is currently being treated as unexplained and a scene is in place.

“Our thoughts are with her loved ones and we’ll be supporting them as our enquiries continue.

“We’re in the early stages of our investigation.
