People in Aigburth expressed their shock this afternoon as a woman was arrested on suspicion of murder. Merseyside Police were called to a property on Aigburth Road at 8.55am today, Tuesday, May 5 following reports of a concern for safety.
North West Ambulance attended and a man, who the ECHO understands is in his 60s, was found dead inside the property. Police said, at this stage, the death is being treated as unexplained and enquiries are ongoing. Police arrested a 62-year-old woman on suspicion of murder. She is currently in custody.
The man’s next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers. A post-mortem will take place to establish the cause of death.
When the ECHO arrived at the scene at around 1.45pm, police cars, forensics and a van for a funeral directors were parked up outside the property, which is divided into five flats.
Police officers continued to guard the property throughout the afternoon, which is opposite the Kwik Fit garage, as forensic teams in white suits headed in and out.
A man was parked up in his car on Galbraith Close opposite the scene when the ECHO arrived. At this time, it was not known what the nature of the police incident was.
He said: “They had the blue lights on when they got here at 9am. I know because I took my mother-in-law out at 8.55am. Later on there were detectives asking the shops for CCTV footage. Something big must have happened. I’ve been checking the ECHO to see what it was.”
A woman living on Aigburth Road told the ECHO she’d heard there had been a murder arrest, explaining officers would be visiting her again today to take a witness statement. She declined to give any further information.
As news of the incident filtered through, other Aigburth Road residents said it was rare to see any police in the area.

One woman said: “That’s so sad. You don’t know what’s gone on. I don’t know who lived there. It’s unusual to see police here. Whatever’s happened is a one-off.”
Another woman said: “It’s awful. There were loads of police here earlier but we didn’t know what happened.”
A third woman said: “We don’t see police around here. We can hear them going past at night but that’s it. You feel safe here. I heard the sirens this morning. I asked the officer what was going on but he wouldn’t say.”
One man working in a local shop swore in astonishment when he heard there had been a murder arrest, adding: “It’s a nice, quiet area.” His colleague said: “You don’t know what’s on your doorstep do you?
“I’ve never seen anyone coming out of that house. I’ve seen people coming out of the one next door – it’s a bit of a party pad, all stag and hen dos. But that house? Nothing. I think it’s divided into flats.”
Detective Inspector Mike Fletcher said: “Our thoughts at this time are with the family of the man who has sadly passed way.
“As this matter is clearly in the very early stages we would ask people to avoid speculating and allow us to carry out our enquiries.
“Anyone who has information which could assist the investigation is asked to get in touch as a matter of urgency.”
